11 helpful oral care tips during pregnancy in 2024.

Kids always need special attention, almost every day, every hour.

To foster lifelong healthy habits, you, as a parent, must always guide your kid on what’s right and wrong and how things should or shouldn’t be done.

In a big list of to-do things, your kids’ Oral hygiene always takes a backseat.

Here are 11 helpful oral care tips that you must ensure for your growing child:

1. Supervise the brushing of teeth.

Children do not have the manual dexterity to brush their teeth effectively.

They usually mess up the brushing techniques until they are 7-8 years old.

To ensure your kid brushes the teeth effectively, you, as a parent, must supervise the brushing sessions.

2. Give your kid a proper toothbrush & toothpaste.

Select a soft-bristled toothbrush suitable for your child’s age and mouth size.

Give your kid fluoride toothpaste appropriately to strengthen enamel and protect against cavities.

Preferably, a smear for children under 3 years and a pea-sized amount for children aged 3-6 years.

3. Teach them flossing, but do not insist. It’s okay if they can’t.

When teeth begin to touch, usually around age 2 to 3, you may introduce flossing.

Initially, children may require assistance, but as they grow older, they can learn to floss independently.

However, if they do not feel comfortable, do not insist.

4. Encourage a healthy diet. Limit sugary snacks.

A healthy diet is essential not only for overall health but also for dental health.

Encourage your child to consume nutritious foods like fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and dairy products.

And while you cannot avoid them, limit sugary snacks and beverages, which can lead to tooth decay.

5. Make regular dental visits for checkups.

Every 6/7 months, schedule a dental visit for your child for basic check-ups.

These check-ups allow the dentist to monitor oral health, identify potential issues early, and provide preventive care.

A growing kid usually has cavities, which always go unnoticed until it starts turning black.

6. If the kid is into sports, a mouthguard always helps.

Consider providing a custom-fitted mouthguard if your child participates in sports or other physical activities.

Mouthguards protect against dental injuries and trauma during games or practices.

Mouthguards are preventive steps.

We, as parents, usually realise the importance of mouthguards after dental injuries.

7. Break bad habits

Thumb-sucking, pacifier use, and prolonged bottle-feeding can affect your child’s dental development.

Encourage your child to stop these habits earlier in their age.

Such bad habits can lead to misalignment of teeth and bite issues later.

8. Avoid sharing tiffin boxes and toothbrushes.

Children share food with their friends in school.

And if the siblings are the same age, sometimes they share toothbrushes too.

This practice can transfer harmful bacteria at times.

While you cannot avoid sharing food, it is always safer if children can avoid using each other’s tiffin boxes while sharing the food.

Likewise, for sharing the toothbrushes.

9. Minimise dental anxiety.

Some children experience dental anxiety.

They fear visiting the dentist.

Create a positive dental experience. Use positive language, read books about dental visits, and visit a dentist specialising in children.

10. Monitor tooth eruptions from time to time.

From time to time, keep an eye on the eruption of your child’s baby and permanent teeth.

If there are any delays or concerns, discuss them with the dentist.

11. Demonstrate how to take care of oral hygiene.

Show your child how to brush properly by demonstrating it yourself.

Children often learn best through observation.

And seeing their parents maintain good oral hygiene habits can motivate them to do the same.
